and the shit been on my mind since then. Its not a bad stereotype, as if there are varying degrees of stereotypes. They’re all wrong but I’ll explain.
I’m at the office late and trying to scoreboard watch before I get on the road and head home. My Evo died and my Asian co-worker was nearby. So I think to myself.
“Oh, I know he has a top tier smartphone with some sort of sports application, most likely Scorecenter, I’ll just ask him”
Now in my head this all made sense. He IS a young sports fan like myself but on top of that, he’s Asian. ‘Asian people always have nice technology on them, especially Japanese, Korean, and the legit Chinese’ -
[Charles Barkley] TURRIBLE. JUST TURRIBLE [/Charles Barkley] way of thinking.
So when I asked him if he knew what was going on in the baseball games and he was like, “Nah” - I was stunned. So I dug deeper. “Yo, can you check online on your phone?” He hit me with “Nah, I can’t” - At this point I’m thinking he was just fucking with me so I’m like. “Yo, quit BS’n and tell me the scores bro, I need this.”
At this point, he knew I was expecting him to have an Android powered or iPhone something, so when he slowly pulled out this old looking Sanyo Katana, he had a look on his face like “All Asians don’t have the most advanced tech on them stupid”
I was stifled. I didn’t know what to say. I just said, “Oh.”
I had just stereotyped a man. Something I definitely try not to do in any capacity. There are no good or bad stereotypes. I think, what if he had asked me “Do you wanna play basketball on our adult league?” I watch basketball, but don’t really play it. I would much rather play organized baseball.
I felt horrible, and still kinda do.
